Affordability shines as the true winners

With NSW facing a housing crisis two outstanding entries won the Affordability category for the 2024 Apartment Awards for Excellence.

Bigge St which was designed by Turner Studio on behalf of Homes NSW reflected a contemporary design made of concrete tilt panel which was also extremely durable.

The use of natural ventilation, light and the minimal maintenance required demonstrated a project that would continue to remain affordable for years to come.  It was also evident that the residents were proud of their homes and loved their community.

The second winner Ironbark apartments by City West Housing and Scott Carver Architects was an exemplar representation of affordability despite its inner city location.

Again, the design maximised the orientation of the block and the roof top terrace with resident’s garden was an exception to the rule when considering an affordable design.

The level of care reflected by City West Housing towards their tenants and the focus on accommodating their needs was heartening and again the residents were very grateful for this opportunity.

Samantha Reece CEO of AAA stated that these two examples required additional funding and support from Government.

“It is quite evident that there are agencies delivering affordable homes at such a crucial time and as such they need to be given priority and support,” Samantha said.

“When you see the two designs that were represented at the Awards and just what is achievable, it is clear that there is leadership in this space and the AAA commends them.”
