Seniors living by Australian Unity and FK Australia took out the Ageing in Place category for the Victoria Apartment Awards for Excellence with their innovative The Alba project.
The client championed converting a commercial office into independent seniors living, right through to palliative care. They were able to join the two buildings through a central café at the entrance of the buildings (which required removing concrete and levelling The Alba foyer to street level.) This is the first commercial re-purpose for seniors living and meeting the stringent conditions would have been substantially challenging.
AAA CEO Samantha Reece stated that The Alba was a hub of activity, as well as offering dignified care, all from a Melbourne CBD location.
"The Alba has redefined seniors living on so many front and the upfront investment that Australian Unity undertook to provide a long term approach to care was highly admirable," Ms Reece said.
Via Architects and Seventh Day Adventist Church also won special commendation for Pavilions Blackburne Lake.
"This project offered fabulous amenities and was located on the site of worship and hence being one of the rare cases of Yes Faith in my backyard (YFIMBY).
"We understand that the church had to undergo an arduous task for approval but the housing choice and lifestyle that they now offer their community is certainly award winning."
